my part on the report

Importance of water

There’s no doubt that water is important.  Not only do we humans use it just about every day, but every living being needs it to live such as animals and plants. In fact that 70% of the world is covered with water and more than 97% of it is salty water leaving about 3% of it to be fresh. On the other hand, 70% of the freshwater is frozen in polar icecaps or glaciers. So all human and other life depend on less than 1% of the total amount of water on this planet! This water can be found on the surface of lakes, rivers, and even underground.

Lack of clean drinking water is a major problem in developing countries. There are many cities with dense populations that lack adequate fresh water because municipalities which should be supplying them are failing due to rising population and bad forecasting of population increases and demands.

The Major Water Sources in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi derives its water from two major sources: groundwater and desalinated water. Over 70 % of the UAE domestic water supply is by desalination. Because the United Arab Emirates have a dry climate and low rain fall which are the major causes and lack of groundwater recharging aquifers.

 Desalinated water in Abu Dhabi

The best developed desalination production and distribution systems in the world are in the UAE. The first desalination plant was built in Abu Dhabi in 1960 with capacity of 250 m³/day. Mainly because of a fast increase in local and industrial water demand more plants were installed mainly in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Nowadays there are 35 desalination plants in the UAE (the six major ones are shown in the image in page 4) with capacity of l,922 m³/day, while total actual production in 2002 was about 809 million m³/year. The biggest desalination plant is in Dubai and called JABAL ALI with 287Mm³/year.

Description

There are three stages water takes to reach to beneficial users and these are:

              I.        Production

Desalination Plants

It’s a costly procedure and takes a long time. It starts by pumping the sea water then treat it by Independent Water and Power Producers (IWPPs). A Desalination plant is a process that undergoes sequential steps in order to remove salt and other minerals from the saline water. Taking into consideration that the term desalination can also be referred to the process of removing salt and mineral same as in soil desalination.

Salty water is usually desalinated to produce fresh water which is suitable for human usage, consumption or rather irrigation.

Underlining the importance of modern desalination techniques in developing cost effective ways of supplying fresh water for human consumption recycling waste water in which this is form rainfall-independent water sources. Referring to the International Desalination Association the world’s largest desalination plant is the Jabil Ali desalination plant in the UAE.

Self-reflection on 307 course

In this essay I am going to talk about a course I took at ADMC which called LSEC N307. Actually it is about improving student skills and how this course can help students before and after graduating from ADMC.

To start with I studied how to make a good CV. Before this course I used to think a CV should be full of information. However I learned that CV has to be key words, tidy and easy to read. After that I learned how to write application letter to managers. This letter helps me to communicate with head manager of the organization and gives me the chance to explain myself more. Then I moved to study something more interesting which is interviewing because one time I was the interviewer then the interviewee and learned what kind of questions I will be getting from the interviewers in future.

In here I will talk about subjects I have learned which help me at college and will help me after graduation. Now I am able to make successful meetings with my colleagues about group projects, do good presentations in front of my teacher and others and write appropriate engineering reports. If I can do what I learned from the course now I will certainly be able to use in my job in future.

To sum up, in my opinion all of these six subjects I learned in 307 course with Mr. Gregory Vrhovnik will definitely help me now at college and after graduating from ADMC. In addition, I think the idea of having a blogger helped a lot in organizing my work.

Dear Mr. Lee Huntely

I am writing this letter and would like to be one of your staff in the hospital as representative (finish government paper work) . I saw your advertisement in ETIHAD newspaper on 20th September 2012.

When you see my CV you will recognize that I will be graduated from Abu Dhabi Men’s College with dgree in Civil Engineering in 2014.

In addition I have studied subjects which make me appropriate for this job for example professional communication which covers sending letters, interviewing and doing presentations. Also I took English communication that course tought me how to make successful meetings, search information using the library or internet and to be very organized.

As you can see in my CV I worked 5 years on the armed forces and 1 year in a private company. That gave me good experience about being a representative.

I am an easy going person with nice sense of humor and I always like to do my best at work. That pushes me to improve my skills and makes me feel satisfied with my performance.

I would be more than happy to attend interview at anytime you decide. I am totally free every Sunday and Tuesday.

I will communicate with your office later to find out if you have received my documents . Thank you for giving me your attention and I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Khalid Mohamed Almenhali

Meeting self reflection

Personal reflection

Meeting is most used method for finding solutions and discussing problems especially when an organization is having some difficulties and need to sort these difficulties out. Meeting could be successful when it meets its goals and could fail when it does not meet goals.

Our meeting was about improving core skills and how to use these skills after graduating from college. In this meeting my job was to appeal the ideas and I have handled the meeting by moving from one point to another.  Firstly i have welcomed the group member, then I gave a brief introduction about student success- core skills. The procedure of the meeting went very well and each member of the meeting participated and done their job and tasks.  In my point of view I think that the meeting was successful and hit it’s prepossessed. Finally, I have asked each member of the group to confirm date and time for next meeting.

Unfortunately I did not have a practice meeting before the graded one because members couldn’t make on time. Therefore the graded meeting was a hard job. Mainly I think that because we didn’t have enough time to think about topic and organize ideas.

Hopefully one time I will be a manager and to have good meetings I will follow some steps to make interesting and effective meetings. I will make sure the meeting room is appropriate and has everything needed for the meeting like some coffee and biscuits. In addition I will give each member targets so when meeting finishes everyone gets benefits from it.
